2: Art Elements and Principles of Design Humanities LibreTexts

design principles of art

The relation between the shape and the space is called figure/ground, where the shape is the figure and the area around the shape is the ground. We should be aware that when designing positive shapes, we are also designing negative spaces at the same time. Negative space is just as important as the positive shape itself — because it helps to define the boundaries of the positive space and brings balance to a composition. Lines are strokes connecting two points, and the most basic element of visual design. We can use them to create shapes, and when we repeat them, we can form patterns that create textures.

I do really feel that a timeline of some sort coming later in the text is essential for students to place work in its social, political and historical context. All art can only be appreciated fully beyond its formal aspects when the viewer has access to the context in which it was created. The format of this text confuses that by jumping around culturally and historically too much. Yes, the text is consistent throughout in terminology and framework. It is as I have stated however the framework that doesn’t work for me in my class setting.

Again, the terms at the end of each chapter provide an easy reference tool for any language that a reader might not be familiar. It not only helps in the reading and retention of the material, but creates a great study guide for review after the reading of each section. I appreciate that the text stresses, right from the beginning, the importance of images in contemporary society. Asking the question -- how does Bouguereau's work relate to today -- is a good way to connect past art to the present. I do wish it would have given more examples though of new media art. This book presents information in an accurate way, although it includes a very limited perspective on art by BIPOC.

You can skip one or two (and even more) design principles and elements if you’re confident that the purpose of your design will be fulfilled the best way possible, and your message will reach your target audience. A designer does this by choosing the placement of the design elements, their size, boldness, color, and other features. The way a viewer’s eye travels over the design, the way they “read” it, is told by movement. To have a perfect emphasis on your design you need to have a clear understanding of what’s important in your composition.

For beginners, white space may seem like a bit of a counter-intuitive approach. In a composition, proportion refers to the relationship between objects with reference to their size and visual weight. Consistent proportions unify, while dramatic variations orient focus.

Unity in design principles refers to the cohesive arrangement of elements that ensures all parts of a composition work together harmoniously. It's achieved when each element appears to be an integral part of the overall design, resulting in a complete and aesthetically pleasing piece. Light contains various wavelengths of energy that the brain automatically interprets as different colors. And, because this instinct also applies to visual art, it can be used as a way to measure how your audience will react upon first seeing your artwork.

About the Book

The convoluted treatment of the rocky outcrop keeps it in competition with the pheasants as a focal point, but in the end the pair of birds’ color wins out. Raphael’s painting of Galatea, a sea nymph in Greek mythology, incorporates a double set of radial designs into one composition. The first is the swirl of figures at the bottom of the painting, the second being the four cherubs circulating at the top. The entire work is a current of figures, limbs and implied motion.

There are only a few images that are grainy or fuzzy and would beed to be replaced (e.g., the statue of Menkaure and Queen). The text covers information listed in the table of contents adequately. Content is arranged thematically as is common in art appreciation courses.

Negative Space

When it comes to symmetrical balance, we sometimes think about it like a Rorschach test where the balance of an image is either left/right or top/bottom. But in fact, the axis of balance for a visual composition can bisect the image at any angle. Here are our three top tips for using principles of design to take your art to the next level. Balance is the principle governing how we distribute the elements of a design evenly. Balanced designs tend to appear calm, stable and natural, while imbalanced designs make us feel uneasy. Hierarchy shows the difference in importance of the elements in a design.

But instead, the bright colors help paint a scene that is innocent and welcoming. It can transform a circle into a sphere or a square into a cube. Even though most of the shapes here are symmetrical, we can still see some asymmetrical shapes, such as the birds, but are still classed as shapes. The lines in this image run in every direction, some parallel and others perpendicular to each other.

While this is a good way to allow for quick access there is room for further development both by the authors and also within the classroom setting and by the teacher. My students were a novice level and some details were not too in-depth. The text is great on clarity and accessibility, written in a way that most entry-level students could understand. The book feels a bit out of date as it is, though not in danger of becoming more so over time. It would be nice to be able to easily return to the table of contents from anywhere, rather than having to scroll back up to the table of contents page.

This chapter could perhaps be broadened by engaging with diverse belief systems. For example, Chapter 7, which focused on architecture, was more intentional toward representing global perspectives and works of art, which I found to be very helpful in understanding global art production. I also appreciated how Chapter 10 highlighted global engagement with sacred structures, sites, rituals, and performances, as well as their significance. As previously noted, this textbook takes on a traditional approach both in content and format, failing to add innovative insights to the art field. It mostly focuses on the pre-1960s period, and there is a notable absence of contemporary art, non-Western cultures, and art produced by female artists and people of color. There is barely no discussion of subculture art, urban art, or popular art, and the importance given to museums for the dissemination of art is minimal.

Giving an object form, or rather, the illusion of depth, relies entirely on value. As an artist, learning how to create forms is a necessary skill that must be practiced whether you find it useful or not. Of course, you don’t have to include the entire value scale in order to create a beautiful piece of artwork. A lot of abstract work will exclude certain values entirely in order to get the desired effect.

The warp and weft of the yarns create natural patterns that are manipulated through position, color and size by the weaver. The Tlingit culture of coastal British Columbia produce spectacular ceremonial blankets distinguished by graphic patterns and rhythms in stylized animal forms separated by a hierarchy of geometric shapes. The symmetry and high contrast of the design is stunning in its effect. The traditional art of Australian aboriginal culture uses repetition and pattern almost exclusively both as decoration and to give symbolic meaning to images. The coolamon, or carrying vessel pictured below, is made of tree bark and painted with stylized patterns of colored dots indicating paths, landscapes or animals.
